Veracruz (State)

Overview

Veracruz is as diverse and fantastic a landscape as any in Mexico. Both a state and the largest city in that state, Veracruz is one of the most historically significant parts of Mexico, one of the most culturally diverse with lots of influence from the Caribbean, Africa and beyond. And, Veracruz is one of the most popular places for second homes, retirement homes and relocating to some of Mexico’s most fascinating and beautiful gulf coast locations. The third most populous state in all Mexico, you will see it offers everything from great gulf coast houses, tourist spots and beautiful beach locations, to mountain hideways, coffee plantations and fantastic haciendas.

The city of Veracruz, still Mexico’s major port city, was founded by Hernán Cortés himself way back in 1519 which easily makes it one of the longest inhabited cities anywhere in the Americas. In fact, it was the first city established by the Spanish on the North American mainland. Dozens of charming and terrific neighborhoods make up Veracruz’s panopoly, a patchwork of places for living and breathing and experiencing some of the best that Mexico has to offer.

But Veracruz is also a state of terrific importance and diversity. Xalapa, the capital, is a strong university town that draws Mexicans from all over. It has recently been discovered as a terrific second and retirement home spot. And dotted throughout the tropical beach-fronts to the low lying foothills of the mountains, and up to the stretches of some of Mexicos most beloved mountain ranges, are some of the best little towns, villages and pueblos. Each is unique and fascinating in its own right.
