San Carlos

Overview

San Carlos is a small town of about 5000-7000 people, on the Pacific coast of the state of Sonora opposite Baja California. It offers some of the finest real estate in northern Mexico and, in common with much of the northwest of Mexico, San Carlos was not developed by colonial Spain. San Carlos was in fact not really developed at all until the 1960s, and since then has made the most of its modernity. The vision for the development of the town has been very well-directed, and two marinas and several resorts and camping areas, not to mention the mountains, lend a picturesque atmosphere to the town. San Carlos is part of the Escalera Nautica or Nautical Stairway project, that has developed marinas throughout the Gulf of California. These infrastructural improvements have seriously advanced the overall economy of the region in recent years.

The Cerro Tetakawi peaks, the northernmost of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range, dominate the views from San Carlos. Separating San Carlos from the Baja peninsula, the Gulf of California is a prime fishing spot for commercial and sport fishermen. The deserts nearby provide a contemplative setting for desert lovers. San Carlos is not a beach town, but it does have great diving, sailing, golfing, fishing, and plenty of other outdoor activities, and beaches are nearby in many of the neighboring towns.
