Querétaro

Overview

Santiago de Querétaro (kair-AY-tero) is one of Mexico’s biggest surprises. Virtually unknown in the English speaking world, Querétaro offers a true modern metropolis with all of the advantages and comforts of a major North American city. The capital of the prosperous industrial state of Querétaro de Arteaga, the city is a classic “just big enough city” of about one million people that seldom feels like a big city. Centered on a true jewel of a historic colonial downtown that looks and feels like the great old cities of the Mediterranean, Querétaro spreads out amongst a true first-world infrastructure. The center of the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 and boasts both a fascinating history, and a thriving globalized economy and real estate as well as retirement communities in Mexico. Querétaro takes more than a short visit to appreciate, though it’s standing as a first rate retirement or second-home in Mexico destination is immediately apparent.
