Puerto Peñasco

Overview

Puerto Peñasco is a port town in the northwestern state of Sonora, situated just about 60 miles (100 kms) from the Arizona border. Within easy reach of San Diego, Los Angeles, and Phoenix, buying real estate in Puerto Peñasco has become an increasingly common way for people to enjoy a second or retirement home.

Moving to Puerto Peñasco is almost as easy as buying a house in Puerto Peñasco. A Mexican “Free Zone,” visitors from the United States don’t have to fill out immigration paperwork in order to visit. Like San Carlos, Guaymas, and many other towns to the south along the Gulf of California, Puerto Peñasco is a relatively new town with little colonial history. Homes and public buildings are a little more modern, but real estate opportunities certainly abound.

Puerto Peñasco is part of the Escalera Nautica, the Nautical Ladder project, a project developing modern marinas along much of the Gulf of California coastline. The 15 year project encourages nautical tourism and is expected to cause continued appreciation in Puerto Peñasco’s property values, particularly as improvements are made to Puerto Peñasco’s land and air transportation infrastructure. Renting a house in Puerto Peñasco is still a terrific way to get to know the area.
