Oaxaca

Overview

Oaxaca (wa-HAW-ka) is both a state and that state’s capital city. Oaxaca the state covers the southern portion of the Isthmus of Tehauntepec and boasts a culture and landscape unlike any in Mexico. Along with its rich cuisine, it has an impressive, ruddy history, many unique Indigenous cultures and a landscape that varies from virgin beaches to remote mountain valleys.

Although in the midst of some of the country’s most rugged geography, a modern toll freeway connects the state capital with Mexico City. From there, it is just about a five-hour drive south of the capital along a windy road that traverses the rugged mountains that the relatively undeveloped Oaxaca coast unfolds. Surfers ride waves at the world-famous Playa Zicatela in Puerto Escondido, a pleasant beach town of 35,000. Due to its relative isolation a quiet, laid back vibe permeates Puerto Escondido and development has crept in only gradually. The town, though, offers several beaches with gentle waves, all the necessary amenities and even nightlife. Further east, Mazunte and Zipolite draw backpackers and sun seekers to palapa-strewn beaches. In and around each of these locations a wealth of adventure and opportunity awaits.

Real estate opportunities do abound both in the city and the state. Renting houses, or buying hosues or real estate in Oaxaca remains a rewarding way to get to know some of Mexico’s most beautiful and fascinating country. There are many foreign residents currently living in Oaxaca and they will quickly testify to the city and state’s unique and fantastic lifestyle.
