Morelia

Overview

Morelia is a historic city in the highlands of Mexico approximately 125 miles (200 kms) west of Mexico City. Moving to Morelia, buying houses or renting houses has become a great way to get to know this fascinating city. And living in Morelia, retirees find not only a great city, but an equally great way of life.

In 1991, as the city celebrated its 450th anniversary, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, due to its hundreds of historic buildings dating from the 16th century Spanish occupation. City building codes specify that all new construction must be in keeping with its colonial patrimony, so the city’s unique character is protected, recognized and celebrated.

One of Mexico’s bigger cities, with a population over 500,000, Morelia is a center of high culture, with major music festivals taking place throughout the year. Among Morelia’s finest attractions is the stunning cathedral built centuries ago of local pink stone.

Situated in the Guayangareo Valley, near Lake Cuitzeo, Morelia is just beneath the southern end of the great Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range. At an elevation of over 6000 feet above sea level, heart patients or those with asthma should approach Morelia with caution. The high elevation does give Morelia an enviably mellow climate, warm but not too warm, all the year through.
