Mérida
Overview

Mérida is the capital city of the state of Yucatan, just east of Campeche on the Yucatan peninsula. Like Campeche, Mérida rests in a very important and colorful region with many ancient Mayan ruins within easy reach. Unlike the city of Campeche, Mérida is not on the ocean, though the drive is only about 20 minutes.
A city of 1 million people, it offers a wonderful mix of colonial history and sunny Caribbean cosmopolitanism. Surrounded by the former haciendas of the rich and powerful who once ruled the Yucatan from this shining city, Merida offers visitors and residents the intrigue of a unique and captivating side of Mexico, a place with a character and heart entirely its own.
