La Paz
Overview
La Paz rests on the southern end of Baja California, and with 163,000 people, is the state capital and principal city of the state of Baja California Sur. Buying houses and real estate in La Paz has become increasingly common for foreigners, but only in the past 30 years has Baja California Sur really taken off, having been granted statehood in 1974. It has fewer colonial buildings than most of the cities of southern central Mexico, but there are a few precious gems remains. The city is generally restful and easygoing but can present the lively charm of the best beach towns of the Caribbean or the Pacific. La Paz offers all the peace and freedom of Pacific or Caribbean islands without the isolation or terrific expense. Renting homes has become a terrific way to get to know the place, especially for those hoping to move to La Paz.
Just north of the fun vacation destination of Cabo San Lucas, on the Bahía de la Paz and the Gulf of California, La Paz is situated perfectly for a unique desert and seaside lifestyle. Living in La Paz means plenty of ocean and desert is always available. The Gulf of California ensures that La Paz is sheltered from violent surf, and visitors can be assured of many picture-perfect evenings on the shore. Those interested in the contemplative, peaceful atmosphere of the desert will be right at home as well, as Baja California’s deserts are as picturesque and as full of life as any in the world.
