Guanajuato

Overview

Located in the center of Mexico, Guanajuato, and neighboring, equally charming San Miguel de Allende, are a couple of colonial jewels in Guanajuato State. Affordable real estate has made moving to Guanajuato more popular than ever. Replete with colonial architecture, Guanajuato is a small, quaint, welcoming city of just under 80,000 people. Many towns in Mexico are for lazing cheerfully with a drink on the beach; Guanajuato is for living a dream in a fantastic and continually unfolding panorama of stone, mortar, colonial splendor and clear Mexican sunlight. Unlike most Spanish New World towns, Guanajuato’s hilly streets do not follow a strict grid plan. As in Taxco, another prominent Mexican silver mining town, one finds a colorful labyrinth of winding, crooked streets, more like the medieval Spanish town of Granada.

While you may get lost during your first few visits, Guanajuato, like medieval Venice, is a marvelous town to get lost in. With large areas designated pedestrian-only, one has the feeling of being in a friendly Mediterranean town. Hosting some of Mexico’s most important cultural events like the Festival Internacional Cervantino, Guanajuato continually unfolds and expresses its own fascinating personality. At times mysterious, Guanajuato offers the chance to simply stroll and explore, relax, and take in breathtaking vistas and charming sights like the cathedral, La Parroquia. It is certainly one of the most unique landscapes on which to build a city, and one worth every moment’s contemplation.
