Health Insurance
Even though medical care in Mexico is inexpensive for minor illnesses or injuries it can prove expensive if you have more serious health problems. For a yearly, inexpensive fee, you can apply for basic medical cover through the Mexican health service, IMSS (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social). This will cover minor illnesses and injuries at your local IMSS associated hospital. We don’t recommend relying exclusively on IMSS. A more complete policy is essential to complete peace of mind.
Some US health insurance policies do cover you when you are abroad but you must read the small print of your current policy, or discuss the issue in depth with your insurance provider. It is advisable to do this well in advance of traveling to Mexico. Things to check for when you speak to your insurance provider:
- •Ambulance charges;
- •Flights home in exceptional circumstances;
- •At what point does coverage begin and will you need to seek reimbursement.
You will probably find that your current health insurance will cover you for a limited time, so check the small print. In these cases, seeking a new policy will be essential BEFORE arriving in Mexico.
