The Mexican people are a literate, cultured and sophisticated people, proud whenever outsiders learn of their remarkable culture and country. Boasting a 91% literacy rate, Mexicans have a high esteem for the arts. Writers, musicians, and painters will all find themselves warmly welcomed. The arts-scene itself is among the most vibrant, interesting, and prolific in the world. Mexican painters such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera are well-known throughout the world and are counted among the finest and most ground-breaking 20th-century artists, with many more great Mexican works making a lasting place in the world of art. Mexican sculpture is also rightly famous and anyone who visits or settles in Mexico is sure to find stark 3-diminsional statements in some of the most far-out places and even to end up owning a few pieces. The Mexican people also appreciate the musician. Performances of traditional music, mariachi music, the symphony, the opera and rock and roll are eagerly attended. A night out at a disco will often find electronic music interrupted by raucous choruses of 200 year-old traditional songs, everyone joining in singing happily.
Mexico is, of course, also a nightlife and festival hub. Cities like Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas have jumping bar and a disco scenes. Mazatlán’s Carnaval is the third-largest pre-Lent carnival in the world, after New Orleans’ and Rio de Janeiro’s. Indeed, the great Fiestas of Mexico are too numerous to count but even those held in small towns will impress every visitor with a lasting, exciting memory of Mexico. Floorshows with dance performances and mariachi music are found in every corner of the country. And, of course, the food in Mexico, often carried to extremes during fiestas, is regionally varied, delicate and cooked with incredible combinations of traditional skill and contemporary daring. Mexico ranks with France, Italy and China among the top national cuisines however they are compared, and, as with those countries, only crude imitations are available outside Mexico.
The Spanish colonial and pre-Hispanic history, of course, means that one can find a great legacy of museums and archeological sites. Whether of pre-history or Olmec, Toltec, Aztec or Mayan culture with their stunning stonework and sculpture or old Spanish houses from the colonial era which were later occupied by important figures of the Mexican Revolution, there is a wealth of history that inundates every corner of the country and the national mentality.
